Grace / A place to start

God wants you

You don't have to persuade God to care about you. He sent Jesus for you. He's willing and able to save you, and you can trust Him to do it.

A sunny front porch with an open door and two comfortable chairs

"Whoever comes to me I will never cast out."

Jesus, John 6:37

God loved us first.

We're the ones who sinned against God, and He's the one who came to save us. He sent His Son, who died for our sins and rose from the dead.

When religious people complained that Jesus welcomed sinners, He told them about a father who went out to meet both his sons. One had blown everything. The other had stayed home and thought of his dad as a stingy boss. Their father wanted both of them with him. That's what they'd misunderstood about him, and what those religious people had misunderstood about God.

Salvation is God's gift.

Paul says we were dead in our sins, and dead people don't have incredible self-discipline and dynamic personal power. God made us alive with Christ because He's rich in mercy and He loves us.

You receive that life by believing in Jesus and trusting Him to save you. You don't have to save yourself first.

More about faith: What It Means to Believe in Jesus

You belong in God's family.

When you believe in Jesus, you become God's child. You belong in His house and at His table.

My story is the story of a guy who gets to sit at the table of God Almighty and have Him serve me. That's your story too. You belong to Him while you're learning how to live as His child.

More about belonging: You Belong to God

You can know where you stand.

John wrote to people who believed in Jesus so they would know they have eternal life. Your confidence rests on who Jesus is and what He's promised, not on how sure you feel on a given day.

If you believe in Him, you're allowed to believe the good things He says about you, too.

More about confidence: That You May Know

God has good things for you to do.

Right after Paul says we're saved by grace through faith, he says we're God's craftsmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. It's not grace or works. It's just what order you put them in.

Grace makes you alive first, and then you've got something to give.

More about life with God: Living by Grace

God's bringing people together.

It's by grace we've been made right with God, and it's by grace we've been made right with each other. Paul wrote to people who'd been walled off from each other, and he says Jesus killed the hostility between them. The word he uses is a word for hate. Jesus killed the hate.

He's still bringing people together, through regular folks whose lives are changed by His Spirit in a way that's infectious, until the little sourdough lump leavens the whole world.

A few questions

What if I'm still wondering about all this?

Do I have to get my life together first?

No. God knew the whole story when He sent Jesus for you. Christ died for us while we were still sinners, and He rose again. You don't have to put off coming to Him until you've managed to be good enough. Saving sinners is why He came. ()

What if I still have doubts?

You don't have to pretend you've got every answer. You may need time to work through things you've been taught. Jesus's promise to welcome you doesn't depend on your having all of that sorted out.

What if church burned me?

The people who hurt you don't get to decide what God thinks of you. Jesus shows us a God who wants us and gave Himself to bring us near. You can take another look at Him without pretending your church experience was good.

Colossians speaks directly to religious pressure. Paul tells Christians not to let people judge or disqualify them over added requirements. He also calls the church to compassion, kindness, honesty, and patience. Those commands apply to the people who spoke in God's name too.

If church has worn you out, there's more here about what Jesus offers, what to do with all those religious demands, and what a good church could actually be like.

You're welcome here

You can come to Jesus.

Jesus said He'd welcome you. He didn't invite you to come so He could find a reason to turn you away. You can take Him at His word.
